Jude Griebel
Jude Griebel lives and works in Montreal, Canada. He received his bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2003, and studied printmaking at the Santa Reparata School of Art in Florence, Italy. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia. Griebel has worked as an artist in residence around the world, most recently in Yokohama, Japan, and at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium. His residency in Dawson City, Yukon led to the creation of his book of text and images titled “Footsteps in the Maucaulay House”, which was published in 2008 with the aid of the Canada Council for the Arts.
In his works, youth exist within a fictitious world based on memories and daydreams. In these images, rooms from the artist's childhood homes are often used as backdrops for illusory and supernatural experiences. In some instances these rooms are combined with memories of other places, often forest or prairie settings where the indoors and outdoors becomes intertwined. The daydreams and scenarios that take place in these spaces refer to elements of picture book and ghost story narrative, combined with autobiographical instances from the artist's life.
